My travel bug took me on a road trip to Chichibu, a quaint town northwest of Tokyo, in the prefecture of Saitama.
Up until last month, I have never heard of Chichibu. I was told by my Japanese friends that Chichibu is the real Japan – an authentic version of Japan that has not been commercialized for tourism.
With my sister in law at the wheel, and my two nephews asleep in the car, I watched the landscape change from urban structures to lush vegetation and rice fields.
“Budou!” My little nephew awoke to point out – Grapes! “Ichigo!” the other little guy called out!
Apart from the grapevines and strawberry farms (yes, you can pay a fee to pluck and eat all you can from the shrubs), there were also handmade soba restaurants in abundance.
Oh, and there were also a lot of sakes to sample on account of Chichibu being famed for this amazing brew!
My indulgence continued with a superb Kaiseki dinner – prepared with produce harvested from the local farms and river. Sleep was blissful after an extended onsen soak at the ryokan.
As Chichibu is known for the Kannon Pilgrimage trail, the next day was our hiking day. We traversed forests and ascended the mountain by car to arrive at the Mitsumine Shrine.
I gazed up in awe at the 800-year old Enmusubi trees that flanked the entry of the Shrine. The area was steeped in rich traditions and history. It was serene, peaceful and very humbling.
This lovely episode of selfcare, reflection, mindful enjoyment of my surroundings was a panacea for my body and spirit, post-covid and post illness.
A friendly local said that Chichibu is spectacular when the leaves turn red and he invited us to visit again.
His words inspired me to organize an Autumn Retreat that nourishes the body and mind through nature, yoga & meditation, fresh wholesome food, and a true time-out from the world.
